Foundations of Data Science

Given the growth in data, storage and processing capacity, data science is increasingly relevant to everyday life. A grounding in data science positions young people on a path to becoming informed citizens.

Based on materials released by the University of California, Berkeley, this two-semester course will cover statistics and the use of Python programming to analyze data.

  • Format: Small group – 4 to 8 students

  • Duration: 70 minutes

  • Grades: Middle – High

  • Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of statistics or computer science is required

  • Textbook: Computational and Inferential Thinking: The Foundations of Data Science (free online)

  • Materials Needed: Students need a computer with web access

  • Recommended Effort: 2.5 – 5 hours per week beyond weekly class
